904L Pipe
UNS N08904, also known as 904L, is an austenitic stainless steel with high alloy content that has a low carbon content. It is widely used in industries where the corrosion resistance of AISI 316L and AISI 317L is not sufficient.
The inclusion of copper in 904L imparts exceptional corrosion resistance to the product compared to standard chrome nickel stainless steels, particularly in environments containing sulfurous, phosphoric, and acetic acids. In addition, it is highly resistant to pitting in chloride solutions as well as both crevice and stress corrosion cracking. Alloy 904L outperforms other austenitic stainless steels as it contains a higher concentration of nickel and molybdenum in its alloying composition.
Alloy 904L Pipe boasts a consistent non-magnetic trait and unbeatable formability and weldability, making it a top-performing choice. This grade’s exceptional strength can be attributed to its austenitic structure, which also imparts remarkable toughness to it, even at extremely low temperatures.
The material is shielded from corrosion in various harsh environments due to the active involvement of high chromium content in fostering and sustaining a passive film. Compared to other molybdenum-containing stainless steels like 316L and 317L, 904L exhibits superior resilience against the formation of ferrite and sigma phases during cooling and welding processes. The low carbon content eliminates the potential for intercrystalline corrosion during cooling or welding. The highest temperature it can withstand in service is 450°C. This type of material is especially beneficial for piping used in instrumentation or control situations where neither 316 nor 317L would be suitable.
