Product Introduction
31254 Pipe
S31254 stands out as a top-notch super austenitic stainless steel that surpasses others in terms of impact toughness, exceptional defense against chloride crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and pitting. These unrivaled properties are due to its austenitic microstructure, characterized by notably elevated levels of nickel and chromium.
It typically comes in an annealed condition, boasting yield strengths exceeding 300 mega Pascal. While heat treatment won’t increase its hardness, cold working can improve surface toughness. The material cannot be strain-hardened by heat treatment. With a typical pitting resistance equivalent number ranging between 42 and 44, the grade offers superior resistance against both pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion, and thus it can serve as a viable alternative to austenitic alloys in the 300 series (such as SUS304), particularly in applications requiring superior mechanical properties.
This particular type of stainless steel, S31254, belongs to the austenitic family and is specifically designed for forming wrought products. Its properties are best suited for the annealed state, making it a reliable option for various applications. The material known as S31254 is assigned the UNS number, while its common industry name is Alloy 254.
This material is well established: the Further Reading section below cites a number of published standards, and that list is not necessarily exhaustive.
Compared to other wrought austenitic stainless steels, S31254 exhibits a moderate level of electrical conductivity, while also having a relatively high base cost and embodied energy.
The bar graph depicted in the material properties cards below showcases a comparison of S31254 stainless steel with wrought austenitic stainless steels (top), all iron alloys (middle), and the entire database (bottom). A completely filled bar in the graph indicates that the value is the maximum within the relevant set, while a half-filled bar indicates that it is only 50% of the highest value, and so on.
