Stainless steel alloy 347 (S34700) boasts exceptional resistance to intergranular corrosion when subjected to high temperatures within the range of 800 to 1500°F (427 to 816°C) due to its stabilization properties. Stability in alloy 347 stainless steel is achieved through the incorporation of both columbium and tantalum.

Due to its strong mechanical properties, alloy 347 stainless steel proves to be a beneficial choice for applications involving high temperatures. It stainless steel surpasses the creep and stress rupture properties of Alloy 304 and Alloy 304L, making it a preferred choice for situations where intergranular corrosion and sensitization may pose a challenge.

Alloy 347 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-based alloy which has been stabilized with the addition of columbium. The presence of columbium permits the prevention of carbide precipitation, thereby effectively reducing the likelihood of intergranular corrosion. By incorporating both chromium and tantalum, Alloy 347 stainless steel is able to be stabilized and provide even greater resistance to creep and stress rupture compared to Alloy 304 and 304L. It can also be used in situations involving intergranular corrosion and sensitization, but with superior performance. Incorporating columbium into the composition of Alloy 347 stainless steel results in excellent corrosion resistance, surpassing that of Alloy 321. Additionally, the higher carbon content variant of Alloy 347, known as 347H, exhibits superior high temperature and creep properties.
