The addition of molybdenum to Type 316L stainless steel provides immunity from boundary carbide precipitation, making it popular for use in harsh corrosion environments. This low carbon variant of 316 stainless is a superior choice for such applications. Type 316L stainless steel is a popular choice for heavy gauge welded components, with weld annealing only necessary for high stress environments. Its impressive resistance to corrosion also makes it a sought-after material for various marine applications.

The austenitic stainless steel grade 316, which contains molybdenum, is widely recognized as the second most significant grade after 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The addition of molybdenum in Grade 316 enhances its overall resistance to corrosion, which surpasses that of Grade 304. The material exhibits superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Moreover, it possesses excellent welding and forming capabilities. Grade 316 can be easily shaped into a range of components for use in diverse industrial, architectural, and transportation settings through brake or roll forming processes. In addition, it boasts exceptional welding properties, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing in thinner sections.

The low carbon variant of Grade 316, known as 316L, is highly resistant to sensitization, preventing the precipitation of grain boundary carbides. This makes it ideal for use in the fabrication of heavy gauge, welded components with a thickness exceeding 6mm. The elevated carbon content in Grade 316H enables it to function effectively at high temperatures. Similarly, stabilized Grade 316Ti also possesses this useful property.

Thanks to their austenitic structure, these grades exhibit remarkable toughness and can perform exceptionally well even in extremely low temperatures, including cryogenic environments.
