317L Pipe

Grade 317L stainless steel is a variant of Grade 317 that contains low levels of carbon. Despite this low carbon content, it possesses the same exceptional strength and resistance to corrosion as its counterpart. Furthermore, this reduced carbon quantity also facilitates the creation of stronger welds.

To effectively machine Grade 317L stainless steel, it is important to use low speeds and constant feeds in order to minimize the risk of work hardening. While more challenging to work with than Grade 304 stainless steel, it does exhibit greater toughness and forms a stringy chip. To optimize machining results, it is advisable to utilize chip breakers. The welding of Grade 317L stainless steel can be accomplished through a variety of conventional fusion and resistance methods, with the exception of oxyacetylene welding which should be avoided. In order to achieve the best results, it is recommended to utilize AWS E/ER 317L filler metal.

Hot working of Grade 317L stainless steel can be achieved through conventional processes by heating the material to 1149-1260°C (2100-2300°F), but care should be taken to not exceed 927°C (1700°F). To enhance its corrosion resistance, a post-work annealing is advisable.

Grade 317L stainless steel is suitable for shearing, stamping, heading and drawing processes. To reduce internal stresses, it is recommended to perform a post-work annealing at 1010-1121°C (1850-2050°F) and rapid cooling.

Heat treatment does not have an effect on the properties of Grade 317L stainless steel.
