321 Pipe
Type 321 is a chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel that has been stabilized with titanium, providing similar corrosion resistance to that of 304/304L. The addition of titanium to this stainless steel grade helps it withstand precipitation of chromium carbides in temperatures ranging from 800 to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, which leads to the formation of titanium carbides. Grade 321 is highly resistant to intergranular corrosion, making it ideal for use at this temperature range. It can withstand oxidation up to 1500˚F and offers superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304/304L. Additionally, this grade exhibits favorable toughness at low temperatures and exhibits non-magnetic properties in its annealed state.
One drawback of using 321 is that it is not suitable for use as a welding consumable due to the poor transfer of titanium in high-temperature arcs.
In this scenario, grade 347 is the preferred option as its niobium content performs the same task of carbide stabilization while being transferable in a welding arc. Grade 347 is, therefore, the standard consumable for welding 321. Grade 347 is only occasionally used as parent plate material.
