They are classified into martensitic, austenitic, and ferritic steels based on their crystalline structure. Grade 317 stainless steel is an altered form of 316 stainless steel. It boasts impressive levels of durability and resistance against corrosion.

The use of chip breakers is advised. Using constant feeds and low speeds can diminish the hardenability of this alloy. All common hot working procedures can be applied when working with 317 Pipe stainless steel. The temperature range for heating is between 1149-1260°C (2100-2300°F). The minimum temperature for heating should be 927°C (1700°F) or higher. One can perform an annealing process after working on the material in order to preserve its resistance to corrosion.
