As a medium carbon austenitic stainless steel, Grade 310 is ideal for use in high temperature environments, such as furnace parts and heat treatment equipment. It is used at temperatures up to 1150°C in continuous service, and 1035°C in intermittent service. Grade 310S is a low carbon version of grade 310.

Grade 310/310S finds application in various industries, for instance those requiring fluidized bed combustors, kilns, radiant tubes, tube hangers for petroleum refining and steam boilers, coal gasifier internal components, lead pots, thermowells, refractory anchor bolts, burners and combustion chambers, retorts, muffles, annealing covers, staggers, food processing equipment, cryogenic structures.

The high chromium and nickel content in grades 310/310S make them exceptionally resistant to oxidation and corrosion. Grade 310S, which contains less carbon, is less likely to experience embrittlement and sensitization during use, further enhancing its durability and reliability. The impressive combination of high chromium and moderate nickel levels in Grade 310/310S steel ensures that they can withstand demanding conditions in reducing Sulphur atmospheres containing H2S. Their unique composition also makes them a popular choice for use in petrochemical environments, especially those with moderately carburizing atmospheres. When it comes to more extreme carburizing atmospheres, it is advisable to choose alternative heat-resistant alloys instead of Grade 310. Additionally, it is important to note that Grade 310 steel should not be subjected to frequent liquid quenching as it may suffer from thermal shock. Grade 310 is a top choice for cryogenic applications thanks to its impressive strength, durability and low magnetic permeability levels.

Similar to other austenitic stainless steel grades, heat treatment does not harden Grade 310. Instead, cold work can be utilized to achieve hardening, although this method is not commonly employed.
